The Olympic champion of 1912 , Patrick McDonald, was handicapped beyond his performance zenit and also by a hand injury. He finished fourth. The Olympic victory went to the Finn Ville Pörhölä, who won with 14.81 m. Pörhöläs compatriot Elmer Niklander - actually a discussion specialist - surprised with the silver medal. The best American Harry Liversedge won bronze.
After five US victories and victory in the interludes of 1906 , a non-American was able to win the sixth Olympic final for the first time. Liversedge's bronze medal was the 13th US medal in the shot put out of a possible 18.
