The men's cross-country race at the 1920 Olympic Games in Antwerp was held on August 23, 1920. 47 athletes took part. There was an individual and a team classification in this race.

The Olympic champion was Paavo Nurmi from Finland, ahead of Eric Backman from Sweden and Heikki Liimatainen from Finland . In the team competition, Finland won ahead of Great Britain and Sweden.

Runners from Switzerland did not take part. Germany and Austria were excluded from the 1920 Games.

Conducting the competition

The race was completed over approx. 8000 meters. In addition to the individual evaluation, there was also a team evaluation. For this purpose, the three best runners in each country were rated with points according to their positions (1st place = 1 point, 2nd place = 2 points, etc.). These point values were added, the order resulted from the lowest sums. So it was purely a place number evaluation, achieved times played no role.

Not all transit times have been transmitted.

Individual evaluation

Date: August 23, 1920

For Paavo Nurmi, an unknown runner before these games, this race was a triumph. Since there was a team competition and he had strong Finnish colleagues, he was able to win two gold medals in one run. Nurmi and the Swede Eric Backman separated early. Joseph Guillemot, Nurmi's fiercest competitor over 5000 and 10,000 meters , had to give up the race about three kilometers from the finish due to a sprain. The Finn defeated his Swedish opponent in the final sprint.
