Eric Backman

Eric Natanael Backman (born May 18, 1896 in Acklinga near Tidaholm , † June 29, 1965 in Skövde ) was a Swedish athlete .

At the Olympic Games in Antwerp in 1920 , he won the bronze medal in the 5000-meter run behind the French Joseph Guillemot and the Finn Paavo Nurmi . In the 3,000-meter team race, he also won bronze with the Swedish team, behind the United States and the United Kingdom . In the cross-country run over 8000 meters he won silver in the individual behind Paavo Nurmi, with the team he again won bronze behind Finland and the team from Great Britain.

Even if he smoked heavily and was not averse to alcohol , he also managed to be Swedish champion from 1918 to 1923.
