Josiah McCracken and Robert Garrett did not participate in the Sunday final for religious reasons. While Richard Sheldon exceeded his width from the previous day by 30 cm, his two compatriots stayed in second and third place without further attempts. The Hungarian Rezső Crettier and the Greek Panagiotis Paraskevopoulos improved their widths compared to the previous day, but could not make up any places. Garrett had already won in Athens in 1896 and, by not taking part in the final, missed the chance to become the first athlete in history to become Olympic champion at two Olympic Games.
Like four years before, the Irishman Denis Horgan was missing here in Paris . He had already beaten the new Olympic champion Richard Sheldon in the Olympic year and had a personal best of 14.68 m from 1897.
Once again, the information from the sources used differs from one another. However, this seems to be due to the fact that at the Megede the performances from the preliminary fight were only taken into account for places two and three and the results from the final day alone were used for the other placements.
Olympic champion Richard Sheldon, USA - also third in the discus throw
