Richard Sheldon (born July 9, 1878 in Rutland , Vermont , † January 23, 1935 in New York City ) was an American athlete .

At the Olympic Games in Paris in 1900 Richard Sheldon won the shot put with 14.10 m and 1.25 m ahead of his compatriot Josiah McCracken . The defending champion Robert Garrett was third with 12.35 m. On the same day, July 15th, the discus throwing competition was held. The Hungarian Rudolf Bauer won with 36.04 m ahead of the Bohemian František Janda-Suk with 35.25 m and Richard Sheldon with 34.60 m. The gap between the first and the third was greater in the shot put than in the discus throw, which was seldom seen in Olympic history.

After graduating from Yale University , Sheldon worked for the Cadillac auto company .
