John Kuck

John Kuck, 1928

John Henry Kuck (born April 30, 1905 in Wilson , Kansas , † September 21, 1986 in Halstead (Kansas) ) was an American athlete . With a height of 1.90 m, his competition weight was 102 kg.

In 1926, John Kuck became the amateur athletic union (AAU) champion in javelin throwing and threw a US record of 65.63 m. In 1927 he won the shot put title . In the spring of 1928 he hit with 15.55 m and 15.59 m twice further than Ralph Rose in his world record in 1909. Both performances were not officially recognized and so the German Emil Hirschfeld improved the world record to 15.79 m on May 6th .

At the 1928 Olympic Games in Amsterdam, John Kuck won the shot put on July 29 with a new world record of 15.87 m. Second was his compatriot Herman Brix , who had led until Kuck's fifth attempt with 15.75 m. Emil Hirschfeld was third with 15.72 m.

Shortly after the Olympic Games, Emil Hirschfeld replaced John Kuck as world record holder when he reached 16.04 m on August 26th.
