Eric Randolph "Randy" Barnes (born June 16, 1966 in Charleston , West Virginia ) is a former American shot putter . He is the world record holder both outdoors and indoors and was Olympic champion in 1996 .

Already in school and university he impressed with shocks over 20 meters. He won silver at the 1988 Seoul Olympics . In 1989 he broke the indoor world record with 22.66 m and in May 1990 Ulf Timmermann's outdoor record with 23.12 m. A shadow fell on the rotary impact technician's career when he tested positive for the anabolic steroid methyltestosterone soon afterwards in August 1990 and was banned for 27 months. However, his world records were not stripped of him.

After his suspension, Barnes won silver at the 1993 World Championships in Stuttgart and bronze in Gothenburg in 1995 . In 1996 he became Olympic champion in Atlanta . In 1998 he was convicted of doping again , this time with androstenedione , and consequently banned for life. He claimed that he had never consciously used prohibited substances. He bought the corresponding dietary supplement on the open market.
