A rail cleaning vehicle is a road vehicle that, as a self-propelled work machine, can take part in both road and rail traffic . This road / rail vehicle is either a motor vehicle or a tram depending on its use . It is used for cleaning and lubrication of track strands of the trams, as in the used there grooved rails easily collects dirt particles.

Track cleaning vehicles are equipped with four rubber tires and - depending on the type of rail system - with four or eight rail wheels fitted. The rail wheels are pressed onto the rail by a hydraulic system , which lifts the front axle of the vehicle from the rail. The tires on the rear axle usually remain on the road surface to ensure drive and braking.

If a rail cleaning vehicle drives on the rails of the tram, it is considered a tram , so the regulations of the building and operating regulations for trams must be observed. In rail operation, depending on the operator's regulations, the vehicles have a sign at the rear with the inscription rail operation and usually have orange rotating beacons on the roof . Adaptation to rail vehicles is required by law in rail transport; a signal light must be shown in the center of the driver's cab roof so that the vehicle receives the signal image (a so-called three- light peak signal ) of a rail vehicle.

The global market leader is Schörling Railtech from Sehnde in Lower Saxony .
