Ryan Crouser (born December 18, 1992 in Boring , Oregon ) is an American shot putter and former discus thrower . He became Olympic champion in the shot put in 2016 and has been the world record holder in this discipline, both indoors and outdoors, since 2021. He uses the rotary joint technique .

youth

Ryan Crouser comes from a sports family. His father Mitch Crouser was a candidate for the discus team at the 1984 Olympic Games, his uncle Brian Crouser made two qualifications for the javelin throw for the Olympic Games in 1988 and 1992. His other uncle and two of his cousins also belonged or belong to the national top . Cousin Sam Crouser had long been superior to Ryan. In 2009, Ryan Crouser drew national attention. He set a new record as a sophomore in discus throwing and won the national youth championships in discus throwing and shot put. As a result, he was in these two disciplines in the US team at the 2009 World Youth Championships in Brixen . There he was able to prevail against the international competition and won with a new youth world championship record (21.56 m) and was runner-up in the discus throw (61.64 m).

In the 2010 season, Crouser was slowed down by a foot injury and it was not until 2011 that he was able to return to old performances. This year he was able to set national age records. He also graduated from Sam Barlow High School and moved to the University of Texas .

college

In 2012, Crouser was fifth in the shot put and fourth in the discus throw at his first NCAA championships. The following year was marked by an arm injury and an infection that led to great weight loss. He was not part of the top national group until the 2013 outdoor season. That year he won his first NCAA title in the shot put and finished eighth with the discus. For a short time he had the annual world best with 21.27 m, thrown on March 28, 2014. He also won the subsequent indoor championships in 2014, and set a new, still valid, personal record in the discus throw with 63.90 m. In his successful defense of the NCCA open-air title in the shot put, he injured his foot and could then no longer compete in the discus throw.

In 2015 he was unable to defend his title. In the hall he was second behind Stipe Žunić in the shot put ; When preparing for the outdoor season, Crouser was handicapped due to a thumb injury, so that Crouser had to be content with two fifth places (discus and ball).

In 2016, he set a new college record (21.73 m) in the first half of the year and won his second NCAA indoor title.

Professional career

In 2016, Crouser completed his business studies and hired Paul Doyle as a shot put coach. Shortly before the Olympic Trials , he improved his record to 21.85 m. Only world champion Joe Kovacs had a better annual record of the US athletes before these eliminations. In the trials he was able to improve his personal record again to 22.11 m (over 22 meters for the first time) and also beat Kovacs.

At the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro a few weeks later, Crouser dominated the shot put. He clearly won both the qualification and the main competition. Four of his six attempts would have been enough for the gold medal and in the end he set a new Olympic record with 22.52 m. He had a lead of 74 centimeters over team-mate Kovacs.

In 2019 he was able to improve his personal record in California to 22.74 m; in the same competition he also reached 22.73 m, the furthest attempts in the shot put since 1990. At the World Championships in Doha, he climbed again to 22.90 m, which meant the runner-up world title. He stayed exactly one centimeter behind his compatriot Kovacs.

On July 18, 2020, Crouser increased his personal best to 22.91 m.

In 2021, on January 24th in Fayetteville ( Arkansas ) , he improved the indoor world record to 22.82 m. He trumped the old record of his compatriot Randy Barnes from 1989 by 16 centimeters. In the outdoor season he made on June 18, another world record on when he at the US Olympic Trials in Eugene ( Oregon pushed) the ball at 23.37 meters. He exceeded the previous record of Randy Barnes (23.12 m on May 20, 1990) by 25 centimeters. It was the first men's world record in one of the four throwing and pushing disciplines since 1996.
