The hammer throw was part of the Olympic program for the first time and was not yet one of the established disciplines. This competition had a tradition especially in Ireland. John Flanagan was an Irish immigrant who came to the United States in 1896 and, along with others, introduced the hammer throw there with other Irish immigrants. In the Olympic competition, Truxtun Hare surprisingly led first, but Flanagan immediately countered his width and became Olympic champion.
