Conducting the competition

The participants competed in two groups for a qualifying round on July 24th, the qualifying distance was 49.00 meters. Should fewer than twelve athletes manage the required distance, the starting field would be filled to twelve jumpers according to the best distance achieved. This rule did not have to apply here, 25 throwers made it over the qualifying distance into the final round. The results achieved in this qualification were not counted for the final.

In the final, all participants initially had three attempts. The six best athletes were then allowed to make three more attempts.

Note: The qualified athletes are highlighted in light blue.

In the final, three athletes faced each other, who were given good chances for an Olympic victory. The Olympic champion of the last games , also world record holder , Imre Németh was challenged by the German Karl Storch and the reigning European champion Sverre Strandli (NOR). But it was Németh's team-mate József Csermák who took the lead right at the beginning of the final. In the third attempt, he was the first thrower ever to exceed the 60-meter mark with 60.34 m, which of course meant a world record. He won the gold medal ahead of Storch and Németh. Strandli was not at his best and missed the leap into the top six athletes.

József Csermák was the first hammer thrower to throw over 60 meters.

In the final, the first five participants exceeded Karl Hein's previous Olympic record of 56.49 m. The sixth, Karl Wolf, also achieved exactly this distance.
