In the 100 meter sprint , the Americans were favored. Before the Games, Art Bragg, Andy Stanfield and Jim Golliday were traded as medal candidates. But Stanfield did not start over the 100 meters and concentrated on the 200 meters , where he also won. Golliday had to pass due to injury. Bragg suffered an injury in the semifinals and missed the final. The US team was represented by the outsiders Lindy Remigino and Dean Smith, who competed against the favorites Herb McKenley from Jamaica and the British McDonald Bailey. The final field was completed by the Soviet Russian Vladimir Sucharew and the Australian John Treloar.
After the start, Remigino took the lead immediately, but between him and McKenley it was very exciting until the finish and the run-in was very close. Many viewers thought the Jamaican had won. But the finish photo and the electronic timekeeping provided information about the outcome of the closest race in the history of this discipline at the Olympic Games. The first four runners crossed the finish line in 10.4 seconds, the sprinters in fifth and sixth in 10.5 seconds. The finish photo - seen in the official report on page 249 - shows Remigino in front of McKenley and Bailey, behind Smith in front of Sucharew and Treloar. There was a time span of 12 hundredths of a second between the winner and the sixth place.
Lindy Remigino won the ninth gold medal for the USA in the twelfth Olympic final.
Herb McKenley became the first Jamaican medalist in the 100 meters.
