Rafael Fortun

Rafael Emilio Fortún Chacón (born August 5, 1919 in Camagüey , † June 22, 1982 ibid) was a Cuban sprinter .

In 1946 he managed a double victory over 100 m and 200 m at the Central America and Caribbean Games in Barranquilla . At the Olympic Games in London in 1948 he reached the semifinals over both distances.

In 1950 he defended his title over 100 m and won silver over 200 m at the Central American and Caribbean Games in Guatemala City. In the following year he triumphed at the Pan American Games in Buenos Aires in 1951 over 100 m and 200 m and won silver with the Cuban team in the 4 x 100 meter relay .

In 1952 he was eliminated from the Olympic Games in Helsinki over 100 m, 200 m and with the Cuban 4 x 100 meter relay in the semi-finals.

In 1954 he won his third 100m title at the Central American and Caribbean Games in Mexico City, and in 1955 he was fifth over 100m at the Pan American Games in Mexico City .

In 1955 he ended his active career and worked as a coach after the Cuban Revolution of 1959.

Fortún died in 1982 two months before the opening ceremony of the Central American and Caribbean Games in Havana, where he was designated as a torchbearer.

The Cuban Sports Federation named the national sprint competition held annually in his hometown of Camagüey as well as the local athletics arena and sports hall after him. The Central American and Caribbean Athletics Federation accepted him into its hall of fame. He was voted one of the hundred best athletes of the twentieth century in his country.
