Two Jamaicans and two US athletes as well as one participant each from the Ivory Coast, France, Canada and South Africa qualified for the final.
Top favorite Usain Bolt got off to a relatively weak start and was only able to overtake US runner Justin Gatlin 30 meters from the finish. At the time, South African Akani Simbine was in third place, but shortly afterwards he was intercepted by Canadian Andre De Grasse and Bolt's compatriot Yohan Blake.
Usain Bolt won his third consecutive 100 meter gold medal after 2008 and 2012 . He is the first sprinter to have achieved this. It was the seventh gold medal so far for the Jamaican, who was fourth among the most successful athletes at the Olympic Games in terms of the number of gold medals. In terms of the total number of medals, he was seventh, but there were still two competitions left for him at these games, which should push him even further forward.
Justin Gatlin was the oldest 100 meters finalist at the Olympic Games at the age of 34 .
