Kim Collins (born April 5, 1976 in Ogees , Saint Peter Basseterre ) is a former athlete from St. Kitts and Nevis , who became world champion in the 100-meter run in 2003 .
Career
Collins first took part in a major competition in 1997. At the World Championships in Athens , however, he was eliminated in the first round of the prelims. Collins steadily improved his performance and was the first athlete in his country to qualify for an Olympic final at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney . In the end, he finished seventh with a time of 10.17 s.
The following year, Collins won the first world championship medal in the history of his country at the World Championships in Edmonton when he ran the 200 meters together with the American Shawn Crawford in third place. Over 100 meters it was only sixth with a time of 10.07 s.
Collins won his first major title at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester. He won over 100 meters, but benefited from the fact that two other highly rated competitors could not compete due to injuries. His victory was overshadowed by doping rumors . After the race, Collins tested positive. However, it was found that the substance found was contained in the drug Collins had been taking for his asthma for several years and which he had forgotten to mention to the medical commission. Collins kept his title and got away with a warning. In the final he ran his personal best with 9.98 seconds, which he achieved twice at meetings in Paris and Zurich in the same year .
At the World Indoor Championships in 2003 in Birmingham , he won the silver medal over 60 meters in 6.53 s.
Collins celebrated the greatest success of his career at the 2003 World Championships in Paris . After defending champion and Olympic champion Maurice Greene had already been eliminated in the semi-finals, Collins ran to the world title over 100 meters in 10.07 s. The race was one of the tightest decisions in the history of the 100-meter race. In the end, only two hundredths of a second separated the top four.
At the 2004 Olympic Games , he reached sixth place over 100 meters.
At the World Championships in Helsinki in 2005 he was unable to defend his title and was third behind Justin Gatlin and Michael Frater with a time of 10.05 s . In the second round, he only qualified for the semi-finals via the time rule, in which he made it into the final as only fourth of his run. In the final, however, he proved his qualities as a competitive sprinter and surprised everyone by winning the bronze medal, as he was not one of the favorites in the finals due to his season best of 10.00 s and his unconvincing first three runs in Helsinki. Another career highlight was winning the silver medal over 60 meters at the 2008 World Indoor Championships in Valencia .
At the 2011 World Championships in Daegu , he was surprised when he won the bronze medal. After a sensational start he was overtaken by Walter Dix in the last few meters and crossed the finish line in third place after 10.09 seconds.
On October 24, 2011, he set a new record for the Pan American Games in Guadalajara when he ran 10.0 s in the semi-finals. In the final he had to admit defeat to Jamaican Lerone Clarke with 10.04 s .
On August 4, 2012, the National Olympic Committee of St. Kitts and Nevis announced that Collins would not be allowed to compete in the 2012 Olympics because he had stayed at the hotel with his wife and trainer. Collins then announced that he would no longer start for his country.
At the Athletissima in Lausanne in 2013 he finished fourth with 9.97 seconds. This period not only marked a new personal best, but also the setting of the world best of over 35-year-old sprinters that Linford Christie holds. He improved this record on July 20, 2014 at the Anniversary Games in London to 9.96 s. On May 29, 2016 he was able to extend this time to 9.93 s at the NRW Gala in Bottrop, where he crossed the finish line as a NRW champion and new stadium record holder. He ended his career in 2018.
