Michael Frater (born October 6, 1982 in Manchester Parish ) is a Jamaican sprinter who focuses on the 100-meter run .

Career

At the 2003 World Championships in Paris, his first world championship, he was eliminated in the quarter-finals. The following year he advanced to the semi-finals of the Olympic Games in Athens .

Frater celebrated the greatest success of his career so far at the 2005 World Championships in Helsinki. In the final over 100 meters, he won the silver medal in 10.05 seconds behind the US Olympic champion Justin Gatlin . The success was all the more surprising when Frater's personal best was just 10.03 seconds.

In 2008 he was sixth at the Olympic Games in Beijing in his personal best of 9.97 s. With the Jamaican 4 x 100 meter relay with the cast Nesta Carter , Frater, Usain Bolt and Asafa Powell , he won Olympic gold in the world record time of 37.10 s. The medal was subsequently withdrawn from the Jamaican squadron by the IOC in January 2017 after follow-up tests revealed doping abuse in starter Carter.

A year later, the Jamaican 4 x 100 meter relay with the cast Steve Mullings , Michael Frater, Usain Bolt and Asafa Powell won the world title in 37.31 s.

At the 2011 World Championships in Daegu , he was sixth in the semifinals with a time of 10.23 s and could not qualify for the final run. But he was together with Nesta Carter, Yohan Blake and Usain Bolt world champion in the 4 x 100 meter relay. The Jamaican relay team set a new world record with a time of 37.04 s. In the overall ranking of the Diamond League in 2011 he came fourth behind his compatriots Powell, Blake and Carter.

When he was only fourth in the final of the Jamaican Trials with 9.94 s on June 29, 2012 , he did not qualify for the individual start at the Olympics , but was confirmed as the fourth relay runner for the national team. There he won gold with Bolt , Blake and Carter and at the same time set a new world record with 36.84 s.

In January 2013 he announced that he was moving from his club, MVP Track & Field Club , to which he had been a member since 2005, and his coach Steven Francis to the rival Racers Track Club and Glenn Mills, who coached Usain Bolt and Yohan Blake , among others . As a reason, he gave differences between him and his trainer Francis. At the same time, he reported that he had developed well since the operation on his left knee in October last year and that he would be fully back in training at the end of January. However, his comeback was delayed and he was only able to contest his first race after the injury in February 2014. He made his debut for his new team in a 4 x 100 meter relay race, which the Racers team won in 38.13 seconds.

In addition to his active sports career, he is also the third vice-president of the Jamaican athletics association JAAA.
