Darren Campbell MBE (born September 12, 1973 in Manchester ) is a former British athlete who specialized in sprinting distances.

biography

Campbell's first successes came in 1991 when he won gold over 100 and 200 meters at the Junior European Championships in Thessaloniki . Silver was added to the 4 x 100 meter relay . A year later he won silver over 100 and 200 meters at the Junior World Championships in Seoul and won the 4-by-100-meter relay. Campbell had to deal with injuries and was taking time out. He changed the sport and played football for several years in English lower leagues, including for Plymouth Argyle and Newport County .

In 1995 he returned to athletics and was able to qualify for the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. At the 1997 World Championships in Athens he won bronze with the British 4 x 100 meter relay. 1998 was a very successful year: at the European Championships in Budapest he won gold medals twice, over 100 meters and with the 4 x 100 meter relay. With the relay he also won the gold medal at the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur. At the 1999 World Championships in Seville there was a silver medal with the relay.

At the Olympic Games in Sydney in 2000 he was second behind Konstantinos Kenteris over 200 meters . In 2001 he injured himself again and missed most of the season. In 2002 he won silver over 100 meters at the European Championships in Munich . At the Commonwealth Games in his hometown of Manchester in 2002 , he was only third over 200 meters, but won the gold medal in the relay. At the 2003 World Championships in Paris, Campbell was third over 100 meters. With the British relay he won the silver medal. Campbell later had to return the medal because his relay colleague Dwain Chambers got stuck in doping control .

At the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Campbell celebrated his greatest success to date. Together with Jason Gardener , Marlon Devonish and Mark Lewis-Francis , he surprisingly won the relay race over 4 x 100 meters. The British achieved a season best with 38.07 s and beat the highly favored Americans by a hundredth of a second. He was able to repeat this success with the British relay at the European Championships in 2006 and was again European champion on the final day of this EM.

Darren Campbell had a competition weight of 72 kg with a height of 1.80 m.
