Harry Aikines-Aryeetey (born August 29, 1988 in Carshalton , London ) is a British sprinter .

Athletic career

Born in London to Ghanaian parents, Aikines-Aryeetey attended high school in the London borough of Sutton until 2006. At the 2005 World Youth Championships in Marrakech , he won over 100 and over 200 meters . The following year he won gold in the 100-meter run and bronze in the 4-by-100-meter relay at the 2006 Junior World Championships in Beijing . In 2007 Aikines-Aryeetey was out for most of the season due to various injuries. In 2008 he returned to his career and improved his personal best indoors to 6.59 s over 60 meters and later also outdoors to 10.10 s. In 2009 Harry Aikines-Aryeetey was part of the British squad at the 2009 World Championships in Berlin . The British 4 x 100 meter relay with the cast Simeon Williamson , Tyrone Edgar , Marlon Devonish and Harry Aikines-Aryeetey won the bronze medal behind the relay from Jamaica and from Trinidad and Tobago in 38.02 s. Before that, he won the gold medal over 100 meters at the U23 European Championships in Kaunas in 10.15 seconds.

2010 Aikines-Aryeetey improved his indoor best time over 60 meters to 6.55 s, but he was injured at the World Indoor Championships in Doha . At the 2011 World Championships in Daegu , he reached the finals with the relay, but did not finish their race. Over 100 meters he was eliminated with 10.23 s in the semifinals. At the European Team Championship in the same year, the British came first. The following year, Aikines-Aryeetey was fourth in the 100-meter run in 10.31 s at the European Championships in Helsinki .

In 2013 he took part in the European Indoor Championships in Stockholm , where he finished seventh over 60 meters in 6.63 s. Over 100 meters he qualified for the World Championships in London and was eliminated there with 10.34 s in the semifinals. With the British 4 x 100 meter relay, he reached the final, but was disqualified there. In early 2014 he won the bronze medal with the relay at the World Relays in the Bahamas . He also took part in the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow for the first time , finished fourth over 100 meters and won the silver medal behind Jamaica with the English relay. He then took part in the European Championships in Zurich , where he won the bronze medal over 100 meters in 10.22 s and the gold medal with the British relay.

In 2015, Aikines-Aryeetey took part with the relay at the World Championships in Beijing and reached the final , which the relay could not end. In 2016 he made his debut at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , where he finished fifth in the final in 37.98 s. Two years later he took part again in the Commonwealth Games in the Australian Gold Coast and was eliminated there with 10.26 s in the semi-finals over 100 meters. In addition, he won the gold medal with the English relay in 38.13 s, ahead of South Africa and Jamaica.
