Zharnel Hughes (born July 13, 1995 in Sandy Ground ) is a British sprinter of Anguillan origin.

Athletic career

Zharnel Hughes gained his first international experience at the CARIFTA Games 2010 in George Town , where he finished eighth over 100 meters in the U17 classification. A year later, he finished sixth at the Games in Montego Bay . In 2012 he won the bronze medal over 100 meters at the CARIFTA Games in Hamilton and was fourth in the U20 classification over 200 meters. He then won the U18 gold medal in the 200-meter run and silver over 100 meters at the Central America and Caribbean Junior Championships in San Salvador . He qualified in both disciplines for the Junior World Championships in Barcelona and reached the semifinals there both times. In 2013 he won the 100 meter run at the CARIFTA Games in Nassau and came fourth in the 200 meters. At the Central America and Caribbean Games in Morelia , he was seventh over 100 meters. He then won the gold medal over this distance at the Pan American Junior Championships in Medellín .

In 2014 he won the title over 200 meters at the Central America and Caribbean Junior Championships in Morelia in a new championship record time of 20.33 seconds. At the Junior World Championships in Eugene , he was fifth. In 2015 Hughes became British champion in the 200 m and qualified for the World Championships in Beijing , where he finished fifth in the final with 20.02 s. In 2016, the first round at the European Championships in Amsterdam and he could not qualify for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. In 2017 he reached the final with the British 4 x 100 meter relay at the World Relays in the Bahamas , but had to stop the run early. At the World Championships in London , he reached the semifinals over 200 meters .

In 2018 he took part in the Commonwealth Games in the Australian Gold Coast , where he originally won over 200 meters ahead of Jereem Richards from Trinidad and Tobago. However, he was subsequently disqualified for blocking another runner and had to give up his medal. On the last day of the games, he won the gold medal with the English 4 x 100 meter relay in 38.13 s, ahead of South Africa and Jamaica. Hughes qualified over 100 meters for the European Championships in Berlin and won the gold medal there in the final with a new championship record of 9.95 seconds ahead of his compatriot Reece Prescod and the Turkish Jak Ali Harvey . He won another European title with the British 4 x 100 meter relay.
