Damian Szymkowiak, Canada
The German Kai Kazmirek finished fourth
The Cuban Leonel Suárez came in sixth place
The American Zach Ziemek was Olympic 7th

American Ashton Eaton was the clear favorite for this competition. With the Olympic Games in 2012 and the World Championships in 2013 and 2015, he had won all of the major championships of recent years. He was also the holder of the world record . Other medal contenders were the Canadian vice world champion from 2015, World Cup third in 2013 and Olympic fifth in 2012 Damian Warner, French vice European champion in 2014 and World Cup fourth in 2013 Kevin Mayer and the German World Cup third in 2015 Rico Freimuth. His compatriot Michael Schrader , vice world champion in 2013, could not compete due to an injury

Summary

Over 100 meters , the first discipline, Warner set a new record for the Olympic decathlon with 10.30 seconds. But Eaton wasn't far behind either with 10.46 s. The distance to the next decathletes was bigger. A tightly packed field followed with the American Zach Ziemek - 10.71 s - and Freimuth - 10.73 s - in third and fourth place.

In the long jump , Eaton was number one in this decathlon. With 7.94 m he was very clearly ahead of all his competitors. This was followed by the German Kai Kazmirek, who set a personal best with 7.69 m, Warner - 7.67 m, the Belgian Tomas Van der Plaetsen - 7.66 m and Mayer with 7.60 m. Freimuth achieved a personal best of the season with 7.17 m, but lost a lot of ground. Eaton was now leading with 2030 points, just ahead of Warner, who had 2000 points. Kazmirek was third - 138 points behind Eaton, ahead of Mayer - 167 points back and Ziemek - 172 points back. The further distances were still very close.

The shot put was not a decidedly decathlete specialist at these games. There was no push over the 16-meter mark. Mayer was the best with his 15.76 m. His compatriot Bastien Auzeil followed with 15.41 m in front of the Brazilian Luiz Alberto de Araújo - 15.48 m, the Czech Adam Sebastian Helcelet Van Alphen - 15.22 m and the German Arthur Abele - 15.03 m. Otherwise there were no results more than fifteen meters. Eaton hit 14.73 m and maintained his lead in the overall standings with 2803 points. Warner, who had to be satisfied with 13.66 m, remained second, 95 points behind. Mayer was third with 104 points behind. It was followed by de Araújo - 155 P, Kazmirek - 170 P and the Ukrainian Oleksej Kasjanow - 189 P.

In the high jump , the American Jeremy Taiwo jumped an excellent 2.19 m and Van der Plaetsen also showed a top performance with 2.16 m. The Australian Cedric Dubler and the Estonian Maicel Uibo each jumped 2.13 m, Ziemek, Kazmirek and the Algerian Larbi Bourrada each jumped 2.10 m. This means that this competition was of an extremely high level. Of the leaders, Mayer and Warner each achieved 2.04 m, Eaton mastered personal best of the season with 2.01 m. Freimuth had not started this discipline due to injury. Eaton was still the front runner with 3626 P. who had reduced his deficit to 68 P. In third place was Taiwo - 69 P behind, ahead of Mayer - 77 P and Kazmirek - 87 P. Behind them, the gaps were a bit bigger. Bourrada was 148 points back in sixth. Then came Ziemek - 168 P.

In the 400-meter run , the final discipline of the first day, Eaton again set the tone with 46.07 seconds. Kazmirek also stayed under 47 seconds with 46.75 seconds, a personal best. Warner - 47.35 s, Bourrada - 47.98 s, de Araújo - 48.14 s, the Cuban Leonel Suárez - 48.15 s, Dubler - 48.18 s and Mayer - 48.28 s followed. After five disciplines, Eaton led with a strong 4621 points, forty points less than four years ago in London . Kazmirek was now surprisingly second, 121 points behind, while Warner was third - 132 p back. Behind were Mayer - 186 P and Taiwo - 202 P. It was followed by Bourrada - 222 P and Kasjanow, who was more than 300 points behind in eighth place.

On the second day, Warner's 110 meter hurdles undercut the 14-second mark with 13.58 seconds and Eaton with 13.80 seconds. The closest to them came with 14.02 s Mayer, Abele - 14.12 s. Bourrada - 14.15 s and de Araújo - 14.17 s. Eaton now had 5621 points in his account. Warner had regained second place, 102 points behind. The order behind them had also changed a little, but the gaps had become even larger. Mayer was third with 214 points, Kazmirek was fourth, 225 points behind Eaton. It was followed by Bourrada, who was 288 points behind the leader. Taiwo was now sixth - 300 P. The other athletes were already almost 400 points or more behind Eaton.

In the discus throw , Lindon Victor from Grenada was the only one to exceed the 50 meter mark with his 53.24 m. He was followed by the Japanese Keisuke Ushiro with 49.90 m and Ziemek with 49.42 m, Mayer was also in the front with 46.78 m. Eaton achieved a season best with 45.49 m, while Warner with 44.93 m was well below his possibilities. Eaton even extended its lead a little with now 6398 points. Warner's deficit was 115 points. Mayer was third - 187 P, Kazmirek fourth - 271 P. They were followed by Bourrada - 352 P, Ziemek - 392 P and de Araújo - 395 P. Taiwo's deficit in eighth was 424 points.

The best pole vaulters were Mayer and Van der Plaetsen with each 5.40 m. Ziemek, Eaton and the Spaniard Pau Tonnesen each crossed 5.20 m. Kazmirek scored 5.00 m, while Warner lost again significantly with his 4.70 m. Eaton now had 7,370 points on his account. Mayer - 124 P back - had pushed Warner - 268 P - into third place. Kazmirek followed in fourth - 333 P, followed by Ziemek - 392 P - and Taiwo - 476 P. Eaton's Olympic victory became more and more likely. Otherwise, the distribution of medals between Mayer, Warner and Kazmirek was still open.

Like four years before, the Cuban Leonel Suárez was the best javelin thrower with 72.32 m. Nobody but him exceeded the 70-meter mark. Kurt Felix from Granada followed as the second best decathlete with 69.92 m ahead of Helcelet - 68.20 m. Of the top athletes, Mayer was 65.04 m, Kazmirek 64.60 m, which was another personal best for him, Warner was 63.19 m, while Eaton was 57.77 m below the 60-meter mark. After the penultimate exercise, Eaton was just ahead of Mayer with 8104 points, who still had 44 p to catch up. Warner's deficit was now 212 p, Kazmirek was fourth, 44 p behind Warner. The arrears of the following decathletes were too big to be able to intervene in the medal fight.

Ashton Eaton had the best starting position before the final 1500 meter run with the fastest time of the athletes in front. But Mayer was only four seconds slower, the gold medal had not yet been awarded. In the battle for bronze, Warner had the better cards with a record nine seconds faster than Kazmirek.

The fastest 1500 meter runner in the field was Bourrada in run two with 4: 14.60 min. Behind them, Nakamura - in the first run 4: 18.37 min - and Taiwo with 4: 21.96 min ran the best times. The times and the order behind them were decisive. It read: Eaton - 4: 23.33 min, Warner - 4: 24.90 min and Mayer - 4: 25.49 min. Kazmirek reached the goal a few places later in 4: 31.25 min, with which he again set a personal best. With that the decisions about the Olympic victory and the bronze medal were made. With 8893 points Ashton Eaton was Olympic champion and reached above all by its good performance on the second day exactly novel Šebrles Olympic record of 2004 . Kevin Mayer scored 59 points behind Eaton Silber and set a new French national record with his points. Damian Warner was a further 168 points behind bronze medalist. Kai Kazmirek took fourth place, 86 points behind the bronze medal. Another 59 points back was Larbi Bourrada fifth, who set a new African record with his 8521 points. Leonel Suárez, Zach Ziemek and Thomas Van der Plaetsen followed in the next places.

Ashton Eaton won the fourteenth gold medal for the United States in the decathlon and repeated his success from four years ago.
