The American Ashton Eaton became Olympic champion . The Frenchman Kevin Mayer won the silver medal. Bronze went to the Canadian Damian Warner .

In April 2015, the IAAF set 8100 points as a qualification standard that had to be achieved in a competition between January 1, 2015 and July 11, 2016.

The shot put was not a decidedly decathlete specialist at these games. There was no push over the 16-meter mark. Mayer was the best with his 15.76 m. His compatriot Bastien Auzeil followed with 15.41 m in front of the Brazilian Luiz Alberto de Araújo - 15.48 m, the Czech Adam Sebastian Helcelet Van Alphen - 15.22 m and the German Arthur Abele - 15.03 m. Otherwise there were no results more than fifteen meters. Eaton hit 14.73 m and maintained his lead in the overall standings with 2803 points. Warner, who had to be satisfied with 13.66 m, remained second, 95 points behind. Mayer was third with 104 points behind. It was followed by de Araújo - 155 P, Kazmirek - 170 P and the Ukrainian Oleksej Kasjanow - 189 P.

In the high jump , the American Jeremy Taiwo jumped an excellent 2.19 m and Van der Plaetsen also showed a top performance with 2.16 m. Warner - 47.35 s, Bourrada - 47.98 s, de Araújo - 48.14 s, the Cuban Leonel Suárez - 48.15 s, Dubler - 48.18 s and Mayer - 48.28 s followed. In the discus throw , Lindon Victor from Grenada was the only one to exceed the 50 meter mark with his 53.24 m. After the penultimate exercise, Eaton was just ahead of Mayer with 8104 points, who still had 44 p to catch up. Warner's deficit was now 212 p, Kazmirek was fourth, 44 p behind Warner. The arrears of the following decathletes were too big to be able to intervene in the medal fight.

Ashton Eaton had the best starting position before the final 1500 meter run with the fastest time of the athletes in front.
