Maicel Uibo (born December 27, 1992 in Põlva ) is an Estonian athlete who specializes in the decathlon . In 2019 he won the silver medal at the World Championships in Doha .

Athletic career

Maicel Uibo has been competing in international competitions since 2009, back then in the high jump. At the U18 World Championships in Bressanone , he finished tenth with a skipped 2.04 m. A year later, in addition to the high jump, he also took part in long jump and shot put competitions on a national level and completed his first decathlon, in which he finished second in the national U20 championships.

After graduating from high school, he moved to the United States and took part in college-level decathlon alongside his studies. He qualified for the 2013 World Championships in Moscow and thus took part in competitions in the adult sector for the first time. With 7890 points, he took 19th place. Previously, he competed in the long jump at the U23 European Championships in Tampere, Finland. There he failed with 7.24 m in qualification. Two years after the World Championships in Moscow, he returned to Beijing in 2015 . There he increased his score compared to Moscow by almost 400 points, which meant tenth place for him in the end. In 2014 and 2015, Uibo also won the US college championships in the decathlon for the University of Georgia .

At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , he only got 7170 points and came in 24th overall. In 2017 he had to abandon his competitions at both the European Indoor Championships and the World Championships . He was also unable to finish the decathlon at the 2018 European Championships in Berlin . He previously won the bronze medal in the heptathlon at the World Indoor Championships in Birmingham . With 6265 points, he set his personal best in the hall, with improvements in five of the seven sub-disciplines.

A year later he set up his greatest sporting success to date by winning the silver medal at the World Championships in Doha . He improved his score from the previous year at the all- around meeting in Götzis by almost 100 points to 8604, with improvements in three sub-disciplines.

In 2020, Uibo participated in the Ultimate Garden Clash from Clermont, Florida on June 7th during the Covid-19 pandemic .

Private

At the University of Georgia he met the 400-meter runner Shaunae Miller from the Bahamas . They married in 2017, and Miller has been using the double name Miller-Uibo ever since. They live together in Athens , Georgia. At the 2019 World Championships, both became vice world champions in their disciplines.
