Competitions

So far, three athletes have competed in their private or sports facilities in their hometowns at the same time and under pandemic-related contact restrictions.

Pole vault men

On May 3, 2020, on the pole vault facilities in their private gardens, Renaud Lavillenie in Clermont-Ferrand , Armand Duplantis in Lafayette (Louisiana) and Sam Kendricks in Oxford (Mississippi) took on the challenge.

Competition format

Instead of competing for skipped heights, which would have been difficult due to the pandemic in the absence of referees to adjust the height of the crossbar, the three athletes worked together to develop their own competition format. Within 15 minutes twice, the task was to overcome a height of 5.00 meters as often as possible and to lift cracked slats back onto the support. Duplantis and Kendricks only had support in noting the valid attempts, Lavillenie flipped the scoreboard one number further after each jump.

Competition results

Lavillenie and Duplantis jumped the 5-meter mark more than once a minute, with both breaking the bar once each. Duplantis initially took the lead and was one jump ahead of Lavillenie with 18 crossings at halftime, while Kendrichs had 12 successful jumps. In total, they each crossed the five meters 36 times; Lavillenie a little earlier than Duplantis, but he skipped a jump-off and so they shared the victory. Kendricks managed the crossing 26 times and showed a series of jumps that would have been enough for 5.30 m.

Pole vault women

Since the women had no home facilities in their private gardens, they approached sports fields in their respective homeland on May 16, 2020: Katerina Stefanidi in Athens , Katie Nageotte in Marietta (Georgia) and Alysha Newman in Bolton (Ontario) .

Competition format

The athletes, whose best marks are all well beyond the 4.80 meter mark, decided to set their slats at 4.00 meters and also to cross this height as often as possible within 15 minutes twice.

Competition results

Stefanidi took the lead early, closely followed by Nageotte, while Newman had a few failed attempts. At the end of the first half, Stefanidi was able to count 19 crossings at 39 ° C, Nageotte 16 and Newman 12. After the break, Stefanidi kept her pace, but, like Nageotte, had the first failed attempt after a few minutes and Newman was able to catch up a little. When there were only a few minutes left, Stefanidi tore a second time, had to put the bar back on with her aching arms for a while and was able to complete a few successful jumps in the remaining two minutes.

In the end Stefanidi was able to book 34 crossings, Nageotte, who was able to keep up for a long time in humid conditions, reached 30 and Newman, who had to struggle with cool temperatures and her technique and had to raise the bar again and again, came to 21.

Triathlon men

On June 7, 2020, three decathletes competed in their training facilities for a special three-way battle : Niklas Kaul in Mainz , Kevin Mayer in Montpellier and Maicel Uibo in Clermont (Florida) . While Mayer started in the south of France in bright sunshine and Uibo in Florida at a humid fencing 30 ° C outdoors, Kaul competed in a training hall in Mainz.

Competition format

As in the pole vault competitions, it was less about absolute top performance in a discipline, but more about perseverance paired with technique. The decathletes were able to compete in an unusual three-way battle: one after the other, pole vaults , shot put and a pendulum run between cones had to be mastered.

In the pole vault, the athletes had ten minutes to cross the four-meter mark as often as possible. In the shot put, the aim was to hit over 12 meters as often as possible within ten minutes and, in a pendulum run, to circling two markings 20 meters apart as often as possible within five minutes.

Competition results

To determine the overall winner, the points achieved per competition were added up. Despite a 25-second late start by Mayer, he had taken some fluids first, even though the clock was already running, he was able to quickly make up the gap and finally win the round with 17 successful jumps. Uibo made 15 and Kaul 14 crossings. Since no one cracked, no one had to put the bar back on himself. With a personal best of 17.08 meters, almost two meters more than his colleagues, Mayer was the big favorite in the shot put in which the competitors had to collect their throwing device themselves. Mayer quickly found his rhythm and finished the round with 28 successful throws compared to 22 from Kaul and 20 from Uibo.

After the second discipline, Mayer had a comfortable lead of 45 points over Kaul's 36, who was one point ahead of Uibo.

During the lap run, the competitors were on the same footing, but Kaul, as the fastest 1,500-meter runner of the three, was able to pull away a little a few seconds before the end and win the run with 27 versus 26 laps of his competitors.

In the overall standings, Mayer had 71, Kaul 63 and Uibo 61 points.

Results in comparison

Pole vault

After the first half, Stefanidi had more successful jumps with 19 crossings than the leading Duplantis at that time, and with 47 valid attempts each men and women were tied. In the end, Stefanidi was just behind Lavillenie and Duplantis with 36 successful attempts with 34 jumps. The men achieved a total of 98 crossings, the women 85.

Conclusion

Pole vault

For the women the challenge was a bit bigger, as their best marks are well beyond 4.80 m, but they decided to set their slats at 4.00 meters, whereby the six-meter jumpers had to overcome 5.00 meters. Since the men jumped about 1.20 meters below their best marks and the women about 90 centimeters, Stefanidi believes that the heights would have to be adjusted, and she could also imagine competing with the men together.

According to Lisa Ryzih , the competition is likely to be more strenuous for women because the men have run up six steps at 5.00 meters and the women actually need eight for 4.00 meters, i.e. run longer. She wants to test how she would do in the challenge at home in training.

The extent to which the different weather and temperature conditions at the competition venues had a significant influence has not yet been discussed further.
