Michael Schrader (born July 1, 1987 in Duisburg ) is a German athlete who specializes in the decathlon .

career path

Schrader has a high school diploma, is a sports soldier and belongs to the sports promotion group of the Bundeswehr .

Athletic career

In 2005 Schrader became German youth champion and in 2007 German junior champion in the decathlon. Internationally, he took 6th place in the same year at the U23 European Championships in Debrecen with 7709 points.

On May 18, 2008, Schrader surpassed the 8,000 point mark for the first time at the 26th  Youth All-Around Cup in Filderstadt with 8194 points and thus also met the Olympic standard. A further increase took place on June 22nd in Ratingen , where Schrader outbid Pascal Behrenbruch's season performance by six points with 8248 points and thus qualified as the third German decathlete for the Olympic Games in Beijing , where he was tenth.

His greatest international success to date was achieved on May 30th and 31st, 2009 in Götzis , when he won the high-class all-around meeting with a new personal best of 8522 points . He placed ninth on the all-time German best list in the decathlon. Due to a fatigue fracture , Schrader had to forego participating in the 2009 World Championships in Berlin. In 2010 he became German champion.

From 2009 to early 2013, he struggled with injury problems on his right foot. He couldn't finish a decathlon for two and a half years.

At the all- around meeting in Ulm in May 2013 under unfavorable weather conditions he achieved his second-best result with 8427 points. He also set up three personal bests and qualified for the World Championships in Moscow. At the World Championships , Schrader won the silver medal with a new personal best of 8,670 points and three personal bests in the individual disciplines.

He did not compete in 2014 due to problems with the patellar tendon in his knee.

In 2015 Schrader took 2nd place at the all- around meeting in Götzis , won the all- around meeting in Ratingen and came 7th at the World Championships in Beijing . At the end of the year Schrader was 3rd in the DLV annual best list, 5th in the European and 9th in the world annual best list.

In January 2016, his comeback was suddenly slowed down for more than a year by a very serious training accident.

Schrader started for SV Halle on January 1st, 2017 . Since the end of 2012 he has been living temporarily in a decathlon shared apartment in Halle , where he trains with Rico Freimuth and Norman Müller with Wolfgang Kühne . In November 2013 he moved to the newly founded SC Hessen Dreieich . His clubs previously were Homberger TV until 1999, SC Bayer 05 Uerdingen from 2000 and TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen from 2010 .

Schrader belongs to the B-team of the German Athletics Association (DLV) .

At a height of 1.83 m, he has a competition weight of 80 kg.

Awards

In November 2015, his hometown Duisburg honored him as “Sportsman of the Year”.
