Larbi Bourrada (born May 10, 1988 in Ouled Hedadj ) is an Algerian athlete who specializes in the decathlon and is the holder of the African record and four-time continental champion in this discipline. But he also competes in other disciplines in individual competitions and was particularly successful in the pole vault .

Athletic career

Larbi Bourrada gained his first international experience in 2007 at the Arab Championships in Amman , where he won the bronze medal in the decathlon with 7046 points behind the Saudi Mohammed Jasem al-Qaree and Mohammed Jasem al-Qaree from Qatar. He then took part for the first time in the African Games in his native Algiers and also won the bronze medal there with 7,349 points, where he had to admit defeat to Tunisian Hamdi Dhouibi and his compatriot Boualem Lamri . He then won the silver medal in the pole vault at the Junior African Championships in Ouagadougou with a jump of 4.60 m, took fourth place in the long jump with a width of 7.18 m and was eliminated in the high jump without a valid height crossed. The following year he won the African Championships in Addis Ababa with 7574 points in the decathlon and secured the silver medal behind Moroccan Mouhcine Cheaouri in the pole vault with a height of 4.50 m . In 2009 he exceeded the 8000 point mark for the first time in a competition in Algeria and thus qualified in the decathlon for the World Championships in Berlin , where he set a new African record with 8171 points and thus finished twelfth. At the 2010 African Athletics Championships in Nairobi , he successfully defended his title in the decathlon and set a new championship record with 8148 points. He also won the silver medal behind the Tunisian Dhouibi in the pole vault with a jump of 4.60 m. At the Continental Cup in Split he was seventh in the pole vault with 4.80 m and eighth in the long jump with a width of 7.12 m; in the high jump he failed to make a valid attempt.

In 2011 he won the all- around meeting in Ratingen with a new African record of 8302 points and thus qualified again for the World Championships in Daegu , where he finished tenth with 8158 points. He then won the Africa Games in Maputo with 5.00 m in the pole vault, after he was in the decathlon in the 100-meter run; the first sub-discipline; had been disqualified. The following year he originally took first place again in Ratingen with 8332 points, but was disqualified shortly afterwards after he tested positive for stanozolol . He was banned for two years because of this doping rule violation . After his suspension expired in 2014, he took part in the African Championships in Marrakech and won there with a new championship record of 8,311 points. In 2015 he reached 8461 points at the World Championships in Beijing , taking fifth place and regaining the African record that the South African Willem Coertzen had in the meantime . Thereupon he classified himself at the military world games in the South Korean Mungyeon in the javelin throw with a width of 51.35 m in 14th place and won the silver medal behind the team in 3: 03.78 min with the Algerian 4 x 400 meter relay Russia.

In 2016 he qualified for the first time for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , where he improved his own African record to 8,521 points , placing him fifth in the final ranking. The following year he took part in the World Championships in London , but had to give up after four disciplines due to an injury . In 2018 he won the African Championships in Asaba for the fourth time with 8101 points. In 2019 he again took part in the Africa Games in Rabat and won there with a low score of 7319 points and won the bronze medal in the pole vault with a jump of 4.70 m behind his compatriot Hichem Khalil Cherabi and Mejdi Chehata from Tunisia.

In 2009 Bourrada became Algerian champion in the decathlon and from 2015 to 2017 in the javelin and in 2016 in the pole vault.
