final

Wind: -0.1 m / s

Two US women and one starter each from Bulgaria, Ivory Coast, Great Britain, Jamaica, the Netherlands and Trinidad and Tobago qualified for the final.

The favorites were primarily the world champion Dafne Schippers from the Netherlands and the Jamaican runner-up world champion Elaine Thompson, who had already won the 100 meter competition. Veronica Campbell-Brown, winner of 2004 and 2008 , was already eliminated in the preliminary round.

The two favorites had the best start in the finale and already took a slight lead in the first corner. Thompson was the first to hit the home straight, not far behind her Schippers. But nothing was decided yet, the gaps were tight overall. On the second half of the course, Thompson extended their lead and although Schippers tried everything to get closer, Thompson won her second gold medal in Rio . Schippers, who fell after crossing the finish line, won silver. After the starting curve, Marie Josée Ta Lou from Ivory Coast, fourth in the 100-meter race, was third in front of US athlete Tori Bowie. But Bowie fought his way past her and won the bronze medal ahead of Ta Lou, which set a new national record. The British Dina Asher-Smith, reigning European Champion , finished fifth ahead of Michelle-Lee Ahye from Trinidad and Tobago. The American Deajah Stevens and the Bulgarian Iwet Lalowa-Collio finished seventh and eighth.

Elaine Thompson also won the 200 meters after the 100 meters .

In terms of the number of medals won over 200 meters, the USA and Jamaica were now tied, both nations had twelve medals each. In terms of the number of Olympic victories, the USA has been the most successful nation to date with its six victories. Jamaica and the GDR have both had three wins so far.
