Note:
Even hand-timed times were still part of the official best and record lists at that time, which had an impact on the short distances in particular and led to different records. The official lists consisted of a mixture in which hand-stopped and electronically taken times rounded to tenths were entered together. However, since the hand-timed times were about one to two tenths of a second better than the electronically determined values due to the delay in reaction of the timekeepers, there were soon separate lists. From 1977 on, only electronic times were officially kept.

To complete this, here is an overview of the records rounded to tenths of a second, including hand-timed times:

World record 22.1 s Renate Stecher ( GDR ) Germany Democratic Republic 1949GDR  Dresden , GDR (now Germany ) July 21, 1973
Olympic record 22.4 s Final of Munich , FR Germany (today Germany ) 7th September 1972

Five Germans qualified for the final, three sprinters from the GDR and two from the Federal Republic of Germany. The final field was completed with one athlete each from Australia, France and the Soviet Union. After the disqualification of the Australian Raelene Boyle in the semifinals due to false starts, the GDR sprinter Renate Stecher was the favorite. But especially after her Olympic victory over 100 meters , Annegret Richter was also one of the gold candidates. Stecher's teammates Bärbel Eckert and Carla Bodendorf, formerly also known under her name Carla Rietig, were also highly rated.

No decision was made for the first 100 meters. Four runners came out of the curve only separated by minimal gaps. Richter and Eckert lay wafer-thin in front of Stecher and Helten. Even on the home stretch it remained tight between Richter and Eckert. Bärbel Eckert prevailed in the end and won the gold medal with an Olympic record . Annegret Richter crossed the finish line just two hundredths of a second behind her, who was eight hundredths of a second ahead of Renate Stecher. Carla Bodendorf made up some ground in the last hundred meters and finished fourth, Inge Helten came in fifth. Thus, for the first time in Olympic history, the first five places in an athletics discipline went exclusively to German participants, who, however, appeared here as two different nations during the time of divided Germany.
