The outcome of this competition was completely open. No nation had so distinguished itself in the sprint disciplines with particularly strong individual runners that it would have been a clear favorite. But even if the US-Americans came out with no medals over 100 meters this time, they still had the Olympic gold medal here and also won silver and bronze over 200 meters . The squadrons of the GDR and the Soviet Union were also highly rated. In the heats, the Americans, who were the only team to stay below the 39-second mark, were particularly convincing.

In the final, too, the US runners presented themselves extremely well with good changes. The other teams had nothing to counter this and so the US team won this race very clearly ahead of the GDR relay, which won the silver medal by a narrow margin before the Soviet Union. Not far behind were the runners from Poland in fourth place. These four seasons stayed under 39 seconds. In Mexico City there were six and in Munich five teams that were able to undercut this mark.
