Prelims

There were two preliminary runs. The first three teams - highlighted in light blue - and the two fastest seasons - highlighted in light green - qualified for the final.

Due to the later disqualification of the Jamaican relay because of the doped runner Nesta Carter, the eliminated relay of Thailand would have had the right to start the final. However, this could no longer be realized and repaired.

The following line-up changes were made for the finale:

  • Trinidad and Tobago - Emmanuel Callender ran in place of Aaron Armstrong.
  • Jamaica (later disqualified because Nesta Carter was doped) - Usain Bolt was used for Dwight Thomas.

The favorites for this race were actually the relay teams with the best individual runners. H. the US team, which had become world champions the previous year , and the team of the runner-up world champions Jamaica. However, the US season had already been eliminated in advance, so that the vice world champion was clearly favored. Jamaica won the competition with a new world record in the time of 37.10 s . But on June 2, 2016, the use of the banned substance methylhexaneamine in the B-sample of starter Nesta Carter was proven with an improved analytical method. Therefore, in January 2017, the entire Jamaican relay was disqualified. Further medal candidates were Great Britain, Brazil and Japan as the World Cup third, fourth and fifth respectively of the previous year. Trinidad and Tobago should not be underestimated either. With Richard Thompson and Marc Burns they had brought two runners into the 100 meter individual final.

In the final, the following eight seasons met each other: Brazil, China, Germany, Japan, Canada, the Netherlands, Trinidad and Tobago and the later disqualified Jamaicans.

Jamaica's final runner, Asafa Powell, was the first to cross the finish line by a clear margin. Behind him, as it turned out after the investigation and assessment of Carter's doping offense, there was the real battle for Olympic gold. In the last move, Trinidad and Tobago and Japan were almost tied. The Japanese handover worked clearly better and Japan even led. At first, Trinidad and Tobago and Brazil followed closely. But the strong Richard Thompson, decorated with silver in the 100-meter individual final, overtook the Japanese Nobuharu Asahara with his running fortune, which finally brought Trinidad and Tobago the Olympic victory before Japan. The Brazilian last runner José Carlos Moreira crossed the finish line in third place, just under a tenth of a second behind Japan. Martin Keller defended fourth place in the German relay on the final straight ahead of Canada. The teams from China and the Netherlands were disqualified due to substitution errors.
