The favorites were the reigning world champion Maryam Yusuf Jamal from Bahrain and the Ukrainian vice world champion Iryna Lishchynska. Other candidates for the medals and top placements were the two Kenyans Viola Jelagat Kibiwot, fifth in the World Cup, and Nancy Jebet Langat, who performed very well at important sporting events in the Olympic season.
In the final, three representatives from Ukraine, two Spaniards and one runner each from Bahrain, Great Britain, Kenya, Morocco, Russia, Spain and the United States competed.
The pace in the finals wasn't particularly fast in the beginning. The Russian Anna Alminowa and Jamal led the field alternately. The transit time for the first four hundred meters was 1: 05.90 min. The picture was similar in the second round. At 1: 07.80 min, the race was a little slower. On the third four hundred meters, the now leading Jamal increased the pace slightly - lap time 1: 02.71 min. Now it got a lot faster. Langat was second ahead of Lishchynska. Behind it there was already a small gap to the rest of the field.
Jamal and Langat were now fighting for the lead on the back straight, they had set themselves apart from the competition. The Kenyan, who had stayed out of any leadership work, sprinted forward almost effortlessly. At the start of the home stretch she was clearly ahead of Jamal, followed by the two Ukrainians Lishchynska and Natalija Tobias a few meters behind. Nancy Jebet Langat increased her lead over the last hundred meters and became Olympic champion. The world champion, however, could no longer keep her pace. Iryna Lishchynska - silver, Natalija Tobias - bronze - and also the British Lisa Dobriskey - fourth place - overtook her. Maryam Yusuf Jamal finished fifth ahead of the Spaniard Natalia Rodríguez.
Nancy Jebet Langat won the first gold medal for Kenya in the women's 1,500 meters .
The medals of the Ukrainians Iryna Lishchynska and Natalija Tobias were the first for their country in this discipline.
