Stephanie "Steph" April Twell (born August 17, 1989 in Colchester ) is a British athlete who competes in medium and long distance running for Scotland .

Athletic career

Steph Twell gained her first international experience at the European Youth Olympic Festival 2005 in Lignano Sabbiadoro , where she finished fifth in the 1500 meter run in 4: 29.91 minutes. In the following year she took part in the Junior World Championships in Beijing , where she finished eighth with 4: 16.58 min and then won the European Cross Country Championships . In 2007 she won the silver medal behind the Romanian Cristina Vasiloiu at the European Junior Championships in Hengelo in 4: 16.03 min and won again at the European Cross Country Championships in Toro . In 2008 she won the Junior World Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland in 4: 15.09 min. This qualified her for the Olympic Games in Beijing, where she was eliminated with 4: 06.68 minutes in the lead -up. Towards the end of the year she was crowned Europe's climber of the year by the European Athletic Association . In addition, she won for the third time at the European Cross Country Championships in Brussels in the junior category.

In 2009 she decided to start for Scotland, her mother's home country, rather than England. She qualified for the World Championships in Berlin , where she was eliminated in the first round with 4: 18.23 minutes. At the Cross Country World Championships in Amman , she came in 38th place in the adult category. At the Cross Country World Championships in Bydgoszcz she was 23rd. She qualified for the first time for the European Championships in Barcelona , where she finished fifth with 4: 02.70 min. Then she won the bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi in 4: 06.15 minutes behind the Kenyan Nancy Jebet Langat and Nikki Hamblin from New Zealand. In addition, she finished fourth in the 5000 meter run in 16: 03.91 min. In 2011 she sustained an ankle injury in a cross-country run and had to end the outdoor season. Also in 2012 she suffered an injury to her foot and was therefore unable to compete in the Olympic Games in her home country.

At the World Cross Country Championships 2013 in Bydgoszcz she celebrated her international comeback and was classified there in 40th place. In 2014 she took part in the 5000 meters in the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow , reaching 14th place in 16: 30.66 minutes she qualified for the World Championships in Beijing, where she finished twelfth with 15: 26.24 minutes in the final . In 2016 she was sixth in the 3000 meter run at the World Indoor Championships in Portland in 9: 00.38 min . Then she won the bronze medal at the European Championships in Amsterdam in 15: 20.70 minutes behind Yasemin Can from Turkey and Meraf Bahta from Sweden . So she qualified for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , where she was eliminated with 15: 25.90 minutes in the first round . In 2017 she finished fifth over 3000 meters at the European Indoor Championships in Belgrade in 8: 50.40 min and failed to qualify for the final at the World Championships in London with 15: 41.29 min .

In 2018 she took part in the Commonwealth Games in the Australian Gold Coast for the third time, finishing seventh over 1500 meters in 4: 05.56 minutes. In addition, she finished 14th over 5000 meters in 16: 05.65 minutes. Over this distance she took part in the European Championships in Berlin, where she finished tenth in 15: 41.10 minutes.

In 2013 and from 2015 to 2018 Twell was British champion in the 5000 meter run and in 2016 indoor champion over 3000 meters. She graduated from St Mary's University, Twickenham with a Masters Degree in Sports Science .
