The runners from the African continent were among the favorites. The Kenyan world champion Janeth Jepkosgei Busienei and vice world champion Hasna Benhassi from Morocco, who won silver at the 2004 Olympic Games and also became vice world champion in 2005 , were particularly well rated. Jepkosgei's compatriot Pamela Jelimo had already performed very well in the Olympic season. Of the Russian representatives, Tatyana Andrianova, third in the 2005 World Cup, and Vice European Champion Swetlana Kljuka , were the most likely candidates for positions at the top. Among the participants was also the 2000 Olympic champion and 2004 Olympic champion Maria Mutola from Mozambique, who was, however, no longer rated as strongly as in her best times.

The final consisted of two representatives each from Kenya and Russia as well as one runner each from Jamaica, Morocco, Mozambique and the Ukraine.

In the final, the two Kenyans took over the command from the start with a very high initial pace. At first, world champion Jepkosgei led, who was then replaced by Jelimo at the end of the first lap with a 400-meter passage time of 55.41 seconds. At this point there was already a clear gap to third-placed Mutola. The rest of the field followed again a few meters behind. On the back straight, Jelimo then pulled away from her compatriot, while Mutola's lead over the competitors running behind her became smaller and smaller. Pamela Jelimo extended the gap to her opponents on the remaining two hundred meters and became the superior Olympic champion with a lead of more than two and a half seconds. Janeth Jepkosgei Busienei was able to defend her second place right up to the finish and thus ensured a Kenyan double success. Hasna Benhassi already passed Mutola in the finish curve to third place and won the bronze medal. Swetlana Kljuka came fourth ahead of Maria Mutola and Jamaican Kenya Sinclair.

With 1: 54.87 minutes, Pamela Jelimo set a new African record and at the same time a new world best time for the year.
