Tamsyn Carolyn Lewis (married Tamsyn Carolyn Manou ; born July 20, 1978 in Melbourne ) is an Australian middle-distance runner . Her specialty is the 800-meter run , but because of her sprinting strength , she also starts over 400 meters, especially in relay races .

Career

At the Junior World Championships in 1994 she was sixth over 400 meters. Two years later, she won bronze in the 4-by-400-meter relay at the Junior World Championships after being eliminated over 400 meters in the semifinals.

With the transition to the adult area, Lewis switched to the 800-meter course, but continued to compete in the relay. At the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur, she was sixth over 800 meters in 2: 01.71 minutes. The Australian relay with Susan Andrews , Tamsyn Lewis, Lee Naylor and Tania van Heer won in 3: 27.28 minutes. In 1999 she won the World Indoor Championships in Maebashi with the Australian relay team consisting of Andrews, van Heer, Lewis and Cathy Freeman in 3: 26.87 minutes behind the Russian women. At the World Athletics Championships in Seville , Lewis was eliminated in the preliminary stages.

The 2000 Olympic Games were held in Sydney and Cathy Freeman won gold in the 400-meter course, while Lewis only made it to the semi-finals in the 800 meters. The Australian relay with Nova Peris-Kneebone , Lewis, Melinda Gainsford-Taylor and Freeman reached the finish line in 3: 23.81 minutes in fifth.

2001 Lewis reached the semifinals over 800 meters at the World Championships in Edmonton . The following year she was fifth in 1: 59.73 min at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester . The Australian relay with the line-up of Lauren Hewitt , Freeman, Lewis and Jana Pittman won in 3: 25.63 minutes. After a semi-final at the 2003 World Championships in Paris / Saint-Denis and a run-up in 2004 in Athens , each over 800 meters, Lewis started two years at the Commonwealth Games 2006 in her hometown of Melbourne over 400 meters and reached the semi-finals. In the season she won the third gold medal in a row, this time with the cast Jana Pittman, Caitlin Willis , Tamsyn Lewis and Rosemary Hayward . The relay came in 3: 28.66 minutes as second behind the English women, who were disqualified because of a rule violation.

In 2007, she was eliminated from the 800-meter runner-up at the World Championships in Osaka . Nine years after her relay silver medal from Maebashi, Lewis entered the 2008 World Indoor Championships in Valencia . In a rather slow race, the favorites Tetjana Petljuk from Ukraine and Maria de Lurdes Mutola from Mozambique tried to run a race that would deprive the sprinting Spaniard Mayte Martínez of all opportunities. Lewis, who had qualified for the final with an Australian indoor record of 2: 01.85 min, took the opportunity to break away from the field. Her final sprint didn't quite catch up with her competitors, in 2: 02.57 min she won the title ahead of Petljuk, Mutola and Martinez. For the Olympic Games in Beijing , she qualified in two disciplines: She was eliminated in the preliminaries over 400 meters and reached the semi-finals over 800 meters.

Lewis is 1.73 m, weighs 60 kg and starts for the Sandringham AC. She is the daughter of Greg Lewis , who won the 1974 Australian 4-by-100-meter relay at the British Commonwealth Games in 1974 , and of the seven-time Australian high jump champion Carolyn Wright .

Tamsyn Lewis is married to the Australian cricket player Graham Manou .
