Francine Niyonsaba (born May 5, 1993 in Nkanda Bweru ) is a Burundian athlete .

Athletic career

The 1.61-meter-tall student from the high school in Royial Province, who weighed 56 kg in competition in 2012, is being trained by the Burundian national coach Nizigama Salvator . The gold medalist at the 2012 African Championships in Porto-Novo , where she set a new Burundian record with a time of 1: 59.11 minutes, secured Burundi only the second African Championships in the country's history after Charles Nkazamyampi in 1992. On July 20, 2012, she improved the Burundian 800-meter record again when she crossed the finish line in 1: 58.68 minutes at the Diamond League event Herculis in Monaco.

She was in the six-man squad for the Burundian team for the 2012 Olympic Games . In London she started the 800-meter run, improved the national record to 1: 58.67 min in the semifinals and finished seventh in the Olympic final with a time of 1: 59.63 min. Due to the subsequent disqualification of the Russian Jelena Arshakova for doping, she later moved up to sixth place.

On September 7, 2012, Niyonsaba increased her best performance at the Memorial Van Damme in Brussels to 1: 56.59 min

At the 2016 World Indoor Championships in Portland , Niyonsaba achieved the world title with a time of 2: 00.1 minutes. Francine Niyonsaba improved her personal best and the new Burundian record at the Diamond League event Herculis in Monaco to 1: 56.24 min. Also in 2016, she was able to achieve a time of 1:56, at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro . 49 minutes to win the silver medal, which was the second Olympic medal for Burundi.

At the 2017 World Championships in London , Niyonsiba took the silver medal behind the South African Caster Semenya . She also won the Diamond League meetings in Stockholm and Lausanne this season . At the Herculis in Monaco, she increased her personal best to 1: 55.47 min.

In 2018 Niyonsaba successfully defended her 800-meter title at the World Indoor Championships in Birmingham . At the African Championships in Asaba , she was second.
