Janeth Jepkosgei Busienei (born December 13, 1983 in Kabirirsang near Kapsabet ) is a Kenyan middle-distance runner who became the first female athlete in her country to become world champion in the 800-meter run .
In her school days, she concentrated on the 400-meter hurdles , but since this discipline was not offered at the national eliminations for the Junior World Championships in 1999, she started over 800 meters and qualified second. At the Junior World Championships in Bydgoszcz , however, she was eliminated in the preliminary run. After further successes in junior competitions, 2001 800 meter Olympic champion Paul Ereng took on her as a trainer.
In 2002 she won the Junior World Championships in Kingston . Her victory time of 2: 00.80 minutes meant that she was 40th in the world's best list of the year in 2002. In 2005 she improved her best time to 1: 57.82 minutes and took sixth place in the world's best list for the year.
In March 2006 she won the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne . In 1: 57.88 min she was ahead of Kenya Sinclair (JAM) and Maria de Lurdes Mutola (MOZ). On July 11th, she won the Sports Festival in Lausanne with a new national record of 1: 56.66 minutes ahead of Mutola and Zulia Calatayud (CUB). At the African Championships in Mauritius in August, she won in 2: 00.64 minutes before Mutola and Nouria Mérah-Benida (ALG). After this victory, she also represented Africa at the World Cup, where she lost to Zulia Calatayud, against whom she had also lost in the World Athletics Final a week earlier. With her time from Lausanne, she topped the 2006 world annual best list.
In Osaka at the 2007 World Championships , she ran away from the top in the preliminary and semi-finals and showed that she wants to shape every race from the top. In the final on August 28, 2007, she ran again from the front and completed the first lap in 56.16 seconds. She kept her pace almost to the end and won the world title with a new Kenyan national record of 1: 56.04 min. The medals behind her were won by Hasna Benhassi (MAR) and Mayte Martínez (ESP), two runners who hadn't even tried to keep up with their pace, but in the end still had the strength for a sprint.
At the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008 Jepkosgei won the silver medal in 1: 56.07 min. Together with her compatriot Pamela Jelimo , Jepkosgei took the lead right from the start, in the end Jelimo won in 1: 54.87 minutes ahead of Jepkosgei and Benhassi.
In 2011 Jepkosgei won the bronze medal over 800 meters at the World Championships in Daegu with a time of 1: 57.42 minutes. The winner of the competition Marija Sawinowa was disqualified for doping in 2015, so Busienei was awarded the silver medal.
At the Olympic Games in London in 2012 , she was part of the Kenyan team and finished 8th in the Olympic 800 meter final.
At the 2014 African Championships in Marrakech , she won the silver medal in the 800-meter run.
Janeth Jepkosgei Busienei is 1.67 m tall and weighs 47 kg. She comes from the same village as running stars Wilfred Bungei and Wilson Kipketer . Her coach is currently Claudio Berardelli, her manager Federico Rosa.
