Ana Fidelia Quirot Moré (born March 23, 1963 in Palma Soriano , Santiago de Cuba Province ) is a former Cuban middle-distance runner . She was twice world champion in the 800 meter run .

She won gold over 400 and 800 meters at the Pan American Games in 1987 . In the same year she was fourth at the world championships over 800 meters in Rome . In 1989 she won the World Cup in Barcelona . She set her personal best with 1: 54.44 minutes, the third fastest time ever. At the end of the season she was named World Athlete of the Year .

In Tokyo , she won silver at the 1991 World Championships . At the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona she won the bronze medal in the 800-meter run behind the Dutchwoman Ellen van Langen and the Russian Lilija Nurutdinova, who started for the united team of the CIS .

In 1993 she was the victim of a tragic accident. Quirot, six months pregnant, suffered severe burns when a kerosene stove exploded in the kitchen of her Havana apartment , and lost her unborn child. Her career seemed over, but after numerous operations she started training again and won the 800 meters at the 1995 World Championships in Gothenburg .

At the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta , she won the silver medal behind Swetlana Masterkowa (RUS) and in front of Maria de Lurdes Mutola (MOZ) , actually traded as the favorite for gold . At the 1997 World Championships in Athens , she won gold again over 800 meters.

On March 2, 2001, together with six-time boxing and three-time Olympic champion Félix Savón and three-time Olympic and two-time volleyball world champion Mireya Luis , President Fidel Castro bid farewell to active sport in Ciudad Deportiva, the capital's central competitive sports complex.
