Palma Soriano is a city and a municipality in the province of Santiago de Cuba in south-east Cuba and north of the provincial capital. The city has 71,180 inhabitants on an area of 846 km². 123,289 people live in the metropolitan area of the city (2012 census).
In addition to the city itself, the municipality is divided into the villages of Alto Cedro, Caney del Sitio, Guaninao, José Martí, Juan Barón, La Concepción, Las Cuchillas, Los Dorados, Norte, Palmarito de Cauto, San Leandro, San Ramón, Santa Filomena and Sur.
The city of Palma Soriano is located on the banks of the Río Cauto . The city was founded in 1825 from surrounding haciendas . The Cuban freedom fighter José Martí died here in 1895 during the Battle of Dos Ríos in the Cuban War of Independence .
In October 2012, Palma Soriano was devastated by Hurricane Sandy . According to official information, 43 percent of all apartments were damaged, making it the municipality of the province of Santiago de Cuba most affected by the natural disaster after the provincial capital itself. International aid organizations played a key role in the reconstruction.
Palma Soriano is the birthplace of reggaeton singer Mey Vidal , baseball legend Orestes Kindelán and former World Athlete of the Year Ana Fidelia Quirot .
