San Luis is a city and a municipality in the Cuban province of Santiago de Cuba . It is located 28 km north of Santiago de Cuba .
The city was founded in 1827 on the site of a ranch . The connection to the railway network accelerated their development. On August 19, 1898, the city received the status of a municipality.
In 2004 the municipality of San Luis had a population of 88,496. on an area of 498 km², which corresponds to a population density of 177.7 inhabitants per km².
The following places belong to the municipality: Dos Caminos, La Luz, Majaguabo, Monte Dos Leguas Norte and Sur.
economy
The economic focus is agriculture and the processing of agricultural products. It is sugar cane , coffee and fruit grown. Nearby are the Rafael Reyes (NNE) and Paquito Rosales (NE) sugar mills .
San Luis is a railroad hub. In addition, manganese mined.
