Segundo Frente is a municipality in the north of the Cuban province of Santiago de Cuba . The administrative seat is the city of Mayarí Arriba . The administrative district is named after the combat group Segundo Frente Oriental " Frank País " , which was established here in March 1958 during the rebel war against the Fulgencio Batistas government under the command of Raúl Castro , who for this purpose joined forces with a number of militants from the base under Fidel Castro The July 26 Movement rebel army split in the Sierra Maestra .
Segundo Frente is located on the southern slope of the Sierra Cristal . in the north-west it borders on the Municipio Mayarí , in the north-east on Sagua de Tánamo (both province Holguín ), in the south on Songo - La Maya , in the east on El Salvador ( province Guantánamo ) and in the west on San Luis . The largest river is the Río Jarahueca , the highest point of the Pico Cristal .
The main economic branch of the municipality is agriculture, the main products of which are coffee, edibles, vegetables, citrus fruits and fruits.
The municipality has 40,885 inhabitants. With an area of 540.2 km² this results in a population density of 75.7 per square kilometer.
On the outskirts of Mayarí Arriba, on the site of the former command center of the Segundo Frente combat group, there is now a museum and a memorial with graves of members of the rebel unit, including B. Vilma Espin .
Since the formation of the National Parliament Asamblea Nacional del Poder Popular in 1976, the constituency Segundo Frente has been represented by the current President Raúl Castro, the only candidate from the (only) Communist Party of Cuba in the parliamentary elections .
