Mireya Luis

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Alejandrina Mireya Luis Hernández (born February 25, 1967 in Camagüey ) is a former Cuban volleyball player .

Mireya Luis won gold medals at the Olympic Games three times in a row with the Cuban national volleyball team in 1992 , 1996 and 2000 , and gold twice at the 1994 and 1998 World Championships . In addition, she received individual honors as the best attacker in several international competitions.

Mireya Luis is considered one of the best volleyball players of all time. Her spectacular jumps, where she apparently still climbed one step higher, were particularly noticeable. Despite her size of 1.76 m, which is rather small for volleyball, she had a tee height of 3.38 m, which is otherwise unmatched in women's volleyball (for comparison: Germany's best Angelina Grün is 1.85 m at 3.09 m) and - one believes the player profiles of the FIVB - the biggest ground difference in women's and men's volleyball.

In 2001 Mireya Luis ended her active career and remained loyal to volleyball in the organizational area. In 2004 she was inducted into the "Volleyball Hall of Fame".
