In the final, three Jamaicans and three US-Americans and one sprinter each from the Bahamas and Great Britain faced each other.

There was a duel between the sprinters of Jamaica and the United States. All three athletes from both nations had reached the final. In each of the semi-finals there was a winner from Jamaica, Shelly-Ann Fraser in particular was particularly noticeable with her liveliness and ease. The reigning world champion Veronica Campbell-Brown from Jamaica was not in the race, she concentrated on the 200-meter run and the relay . Of the Americans, Muna Lee made the best impression in the preliminary decision, while Vice World Champion Lauryn Williams had to let two Jamaicans go first.

From the start, Fraser, the smallest runner in the field, was in the lead. She didn't give her opponents a chance in the final stages either and won this race by a clear margin. Halfway through the course, her compatriot Sherone Simpson was still just behind her, followed a little further behind by the third Jamaican Kerron Stewart, Debbie Ferguson-McKenzie from the Bahamas and Williams. On the second half of the course, Simpson lost his rhythm a little, so that the runners behind came closer. In the end Shelly-Ann Fraser won in a very good 10.78 seconds. Second place and thus the silver medal had to be shared: Sherone Simpson and Kerron Stewart were exactly two tenths of a second behind the winner. The duel between the two nations had clearly gone to Jamaica. Lauryn Williams finished fourth, five hundredths of a second after the two silver medalists. Muna Lee was another four hundredths of a second back in fifth place, ahead of the surprisingly strong Brit Jeanette Kwakye.

Shelly-Ann Fraser won Jamaica's first gold medal in the women's 100-meter race .
