Two Americans and two Jamaicans qualified for the final. The final field was completed by one starter each from Bulgaria, Cuba, Nigeria and the united team.

World champion Katrin Krabbe had been banned for violating the doping regulations . Favorites, for this competition were the highly rated, the leader of the world's annual best list and WM -Third 1991 Merlene Ottey of Jamaica, the World silver medalist Gwen Torrence from the United States and their teammate Gail Devers, who was very strong in the hurdles.

The final race was very close. With a headwind of 1.0 meters per second Gail Devers won the gold medal, only a hundredth of a second behind her was the Jamaican Juliet Cuthbert. Another hundredth of a second behind Cuthbert, Irina Priwalowa from the united team crossed the finish line and won the bronze medal. Gwen Torrence finished fourth ahead of Merlene Ottey. There were only six hundredths of a second between the First Devers and the Fifth Ottey. Given the headwind, the times with five runners under 10.9 s were excellent overall.

A short time later, Torrence accused two of the three medalists of doping, although she did not say who exactly she was talking about. A few days later she withdrew her statement.

Gail Devers ran for the eighth US gold medal in the fifteenth Olympic final of the discipline.

Juliet Cuthbert won Jamaica's first women's 100 meter medal .
