African Athletics Championships 1992

The 8th African Athletics Championships took place from June 25th to 28th, 1992 in Belle Vue Maurel ( Mauritius ). The venue was the Sir Anerood Jugnauth Stadium (today Stade Anjalay ).

Decisions were made in 22 disciplines for men and 19 disciplines for women. For women there have not yet been any competitions in the 3,000 meter obstacle course , pole vault and hammer throw , but for the first time in the triple jump . For men, the marathon has been removed from the program.

336 athletes from 24 countries took part. Five athletes managed to defend their title: Ayodele Aladefa ( NGR , long jump ), Toussaint Rabenala ( MDG , triple jump ), Derartu Tulu ( ETH , 3000 meter run and 10,000 meter run ), Lucienne N'Da ( CIV , high jump for the fourth Times in a row) and Seraphina Nyauma ( KEN , javelin throw ). In addition, the Nigerian women's 4 x 400 meter relay won for the fourth time overall and for the third time in a row at the African Championships.

After the abolition of apartheid began in South Africa , South African athletes were allowed to participate in the African Athletics Championships for the first time.
