Josephat Machuka

Josephat Machuka (also: Josphat Machuka ; born December 12, 1973 in Kisii , Nyanza Province ) is a former Kenyan long-distance runner .

In 1992 and 1993 he won bronze in the junior race of the World Cross Country Championships . At the 1992 African Athletics Championships , he won bronze over 5000 m and gold over 10,000 m . In 1995 he was fifth at the World Athletics Championships in Gothenburg over 10,000 m and won gold at the Pan-African Games in Harare. The following year he was tenth at the World Cross Country Championships and won gold with the Kenyan team. At the Olympic Games in Atlanta , he was fifth over 10,000 m.

In 1993 and 1996 he won the Dam tot Damloop and both times set a world record over 10 miles . In 1994 he won the Carlsbad 5000 , in 1995 and 1996 the Zevenheuvelenloop .

Machuka gained dubious fame through an incident early in his career. At the World Junior Athletics Championships in 1992 in Seoul, he was in the lead on the final lap of the 10,000-meter run when the Ethiopian Haile Gebrselassie overtook him on the home straight. Machuka was upset that Gebrselassie had not done any leadership work during the race and hit the Ethiopian on the back of the head. However, he could not prevent his defeat and was then disqualified.
