1998 African Athletics Championships

The 11th African Athletics Championships took place from August 18 to 22, 1998 in the Léopold Sédar Senghor stadium in the Senegalese capital Dakar .

Decisions were made in 22 disciplines for men and 20 disciplines for women. For women there have not yet been any competitions in the 3000 meter obstacle course and pole vault , but for the first time in hammer throw . Compared to the previous African Championships, the 10,000-meter run for men and women was replaced by a 3,000-meter run .

395 athletes from 39 countries took part. Three of them managed to defend their title in their discipline in Dakar: Seun Ogunkoya ( NGR , 100-meter run ), Hatem Ghoula ( TUN , 20 km walk ), Glory Alozie (NGR, 100-meter hurdles ). In addition, the same countries won the 4 x 400 meter relay with Nigeria in the women and Senegal in the men as at the last African Championships.
