The Stade Léopold Sédar Senghor is a football stadium with an athletics facility and is located in the Patte d'Oie district of the West African port city of Dakar , the capital of Senegal .

history

Initially, the sports facility, inaugurated in 1985 by the then President Abdou Diouf , was called the Stade de l'Amitié ( German  Stadium of Friendship ). In 2001, the facility was named in honor of the former president (1960–1980) and poet Léopold Sédar Senghor , who died on December 20, 2001.

The venue has a capacity of 60,000 and is the home of the Senegalese national soccer team and the ASC Jeanne d'Arc soccer club . In 1992, the stadium was the venue for a total of 14 games of the African Cup of Nations , including six preliminary round games and the games of the final round, including the final.

In 2010, 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2016, the stadium was the venue for the international athletics event IAAF World Challenge Dakar .
