Hestrie Cloete (born Storbeck ; born August 26, 1978 in Germiston ) is a former South African high jumper . She was twice world champion.
Life
She won the silver medal at the Olympic Games in Sydney in 2000 and in Athens in 2004 . At the World Championships in Edmonton in 2001 and in Paris in 2003 , she was each world champion. Her victory in Paris brought her close to Stefka Kostadinova's world record with 2.06 , which is also the current African record .
The 1.85 m tall athlete (competition weight: 68 kg) was one of the dazzling personalities of the athletics scene. She smoked a pack of cigarettes a day, ate what she liked and still performed at her best for years.
The hiatus she took after the 2004 Olympics to have a child turned out to be a permanent goodbye to sport. She became pregnant in the fall of 2004, but lost her child. Shortly thereafter, she divorced her husband. In 2005 she married the singer Jurie Els and in 2007 had a daughter.
Awards
In 2003 Cloete received the Order of Ikhamanga in silver. In the same year she was named " World Athlete of the Year " by the IAAF .
