At the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur , a total of 46 athletics competitions were held between September 16 and 21, 24 of which were for men and 22 for women. The venue was the Bukit Jalil National Stadium .

The New Zealander Craig Barrett was leading with a five minute lead until shortly before the end, but collapsed dehydrated one kilometer before the finish and had to receive medical attention. This paved the way for the host country's first victory in an athletics competition in the history of the Commonwealth Games.
