Margaret Okayo (born May 30, 1976 in Masaba , Kisii ) is a Kenyan long-distance runner .

Life

She grew up among nine siblings. In 1997 the petite runner (1.50 m, 39 kg) was discovered by her future trainer Gabriele Rosa , who convinced her to go to Italy and compete there.

Her successes include numerous victories and course records in major marathons (e.g. New York City Marathon 2003 ) and other road races . In 2004 she, like Paula Radcliffe and Lidia Șimon, had to give up prematurely at the heat marathon of the Olympic Games in Athens .
