Ike Ibeabuchi (born February 2, 1973 in Isuochi , Nigeria ) (born Ikemefula Charles Ibeabuchi) is a former Nigerian heavyweight boxer.
He started boxing in 1990 after seeing Buster Douglas knocked out Mike Tyson. He hit Dunkin Dokiwari twice. In 1993 Ibeabuchi emigrated to the USA and won local amateur titles in Texas under Curtis Cokes in 1994.
In October 1994 he made his professional debut. After 16 development fights, he fought on June 7, 1997 against the then undefeated David Tua . In a spectacular fight with an unusually high speed for heavyweight standards (1730 strokes, 975 of which by him) Ibeabuchi was finally able to prevail on points. With that he was considered to have risen to the top of the world. Ibeabuchi's 975 strokes was considered a heavyweight record until October 6, 2000, when David Bostice hit Ed Mahone 1044 times.
But at this time he also began to struggle with mental health problems. Eventually he kidnapped the son of a former friend and deliberately drove him into the pillar of a bridge, causing permanent damage to the child. He was detained for two months and paid an unknown sum to the child's mother. After two more fights he met the also undefeated Chris Byrd in March 1999 and won in round five by technical knockout.
Shortly afterwards, Ibeabuchi was arrested for raping a striptease dancer and sentenced to a long prison term. He began serving his sentence in 1999 at the Lovelock Correctional Center in Lovelock, Nevada . He was released in November 2015.
