Matthew "Matt" Shirvington (born October 25, 1978 in Sydney ) is an Australian sprinter .

In 1998 he won his first of five consecutive Australian championship titles in the 100 meter run . In the same season he won the bronze medal in the 4 x 100 meter relay at the Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur . He also took fourth place there over 100 m in a new national record time of 10.03 s.

In 1999 he was fourth in the 60-meter run at the World Indoor Championships in Maebashi with a personal best of 6.52 s . At the World Championships in Seville outdoors he started over 100 m and 200 m and reached the quarter-finals. With the season he was eliminated in the qualifying round.

Shirvington participated in the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney. In the 100-meter run and in the relay, he reached the semi-finals, while in the 200-meter run he failed in the first round. In 2001 he finished fifth at the World Indoor Championships in Lisbon over 60 m.

He celebrated the greatest success of his career by winning the bronze medal in the 4 x 100 meter relay at the 2001 World Athletics Championships in Edmonton . The Australian quartet Matt Shirvington, Paul Di Bella , Steve Brimacombe and Adam Basil only reached the finish line in fourth place with a time of 38.83 s. Due to the subsequent disqualification of the US relay because of a doping offense by their runner Tim Montgomery , the Australians moved up one place in the ranking. In the 100-meter run, Shirvington reached the semifinals in Edmonton.

At the 2003 World Athletics Championships in Paris , he missed the finals with the relay. He ran over 100 m into the quarter-finals. At the following world championships, Shirvington only appeared in the relay. In 2003 the Australian season reached fifth place, Shirvington was only used in the qualifying round. In 2005 , the Australians failed in the preliminary round.

Matt Shirvington has a competition weight of 80 kg with a height of 1.83 m.
